The secret to having a great lawn is to build healthy roots!
Cutting the lawn weekly allows less of the grass blade to be taken off at a single time. You typically never want to take off more than 1/3 the length of the entire blade at once. Since cutting the blade is indirectly the same as cutting the root, taking off more than 1/3 of the blade at a single time will shorten the length of the roots too quickly. Shortening the lawns roots too quickly leaves your grass vulnerable to attacks by insects who feed on shallow root systems. Long thick roots will help fight off these insects while short thin roots will create a perfect environment for these hungry pests. That could be one expensive meal that you may end up paying for.
Cutting the lawn once per week during the growing season will ensure your roots get a chance to grow and be groomed properly. This adjustment allows your lawns roots to grow deep into the soil where there is more water available, cooler temperatures for your lawn, and soil nutrients that can be quickly absorbed as needed. It also substantially reduces thatch build up on the turfs surface which in essence allows you lawn to breath better.
This frequent cutting method also helps to choke out many types of existing weeds. Many species of weeds find it hard to compete with frequent mowing. They struggle to re-establish themselves when this happens and simply begin to die off. You may also want to consider cutting on higher levels if weeds are a problem. Weed roots simply cannot compete with healthy grass roots so nature is already on your side if you wish to have a beautiful lawn this year. Weed roots are naturally shallow and the weeds will begin to choke when thick grass roots overwhelm them. They won't be able to compete for nutrients in a well established lawn and their survival will become very limited. This is a more natural and environmental friendly way to help the fight against weeds on your turf.
